A Brief History of Our Business
The article below was summarized from the May 24, 2002 edition of the Insider Newspaper which was originally written by Gail Gilley.

In 1979, Lanny Cope decided to build his business, Cope's Custom Slaughter.  He had previously cut meat for nineteen years at a local grocery store in Sparta.  He was born and raised in White County and wanted to provide a service of custom meat processing for the local farmers and deer hunters.  By 1980, in addition to processing deer for the local hunters throughout the months of September to January, Lanny was slaughtering beef, hogs, and sheep for local farmers who raised their animals for processing. In 1985, Lanny began to cut, wrap, and sell USDA choice meats.  The meat would be government inspected; however, the cutting, grinding, and seasoning was to be done in-house.  Only choice meat was to be sold and packed for the public.

Today, along with his son, Cayce, who has cut meat since he was nine years old, wife Debby, and daughter Brandy, Lanny continues to process meat for local farmers in addition to selling choice meats.  According to Lanny, "Customers make the difference, and we have the best."  So, before you light up the grill, take the short trip up Bon Air Mountain to Cope's Custom Slaughter and talk with Lanny, his family, or his friendly staff about purchasing USDA choice meats or custom processing.  They will be glad to answer any question you may have on either topic.
